With the new year comes the promise of fresh starts, a long laundry list of resolutions and air of optimism. 2015 is upon us. While looking back distracts us from the now, a bit of reflection from the good, bad and the ugly from the year’s past may not be so…daunting. Given the chance, and change of perspective, it may even be enlightening, but that is really up to you.
For me, 2014 was an amazing year. I started my fashion blog The Damsel in the Dress chronicling my effervescent obsession with black. See, black and I go together like PB&J, we’re a team- like Mean Girls, colors can’t sit with us (#teamnonewfriends)- though I do make an exception for hues of gray and white.
With that being said, here’s my top 10 “best of” looks of the year:
10: #GetDressed-I love this look as it represents one of the biggest trends of 2014: Suits and separates aka co-ords. From a cropped top and shorts combo to a bralette and matching skirt, from the runway to celebrities and down to the bloggers, everybody has rocked it one way or another. Its basically a dress cut out into two pieces, resulting in versatility and in turn flexibility in your closet which means more options and more wear! How can you go wrong with that?! My fashion forecast is that it’ll be a viable trend in 2015.
9: I Draped My Wool Coat On My Shoulders-Skirts are an obsession of mine. I’d rather wear a skirt than denim. From circle skirts to pencil I have a huge collection in my closet. This look by far is my favorite from the archives. Very feminine and tres chic.
8: The Damsel Does Sasquatch -Sasquatch weekend was definitely one of the highlights of my year. It was my first ever camping trip and boy, is it not for me (I don’t get down with the no shower for days thing). It was still magical as the Gorge is a breathtaking backdrop to the best music in the world. My all time favorite set was Chance The Rapper hands down! Major Lazer was a close second.
This was my Day 2 look, and as a consequence of wearing this rad caged bikini top on the hottest day of S’Quatch, I had major criss cross ran lines that lasted the entire summer. I have no regrets though. YOLO!
7: Simplicity-Full circle skirt. Need I say more?! Skirt obsession continues…
6: The Casual Look-This is my ideal business casual attire featuring my favorite matte coated leggings. 5 stars for comfortability. If you haven’t noticed by now, I am all about versatility. I love classic pieces that can work for me time and time again.
5: Grey Hues–Knee High Boots have been a prominent trend in the shoe department this year, especially for fall/winter. I’ve becoming quite the collector, owning 6 pairs to date! This look is all gray, a switch up from the all black ensembles that have become a signature of mine.
4: Neoprene Heaven-If Knee High Boots were the shoes of the year, Neoprene, hands down wins fabric of the year. That’s right folks, its the same material used in Scuba gear! I love it because it maintains its shape. I’ve seen it used to make a dress, skirt, top, what have you, but the most creative showstopping version I’ve come across in are these open toed Knee High Boots from Australian brand, Shakuhachi.
3: Alexander Wang X H&M-Alexander Wang’s collaboration with H and M was the best of the year, hands down! It was my first rodeo waiting in line for a designer collection. Standing in line at the crack of dawn has never been so rewarding! Again with the co-ords. This time, more of a sportswear vibe, a signature of Mr. Wang’s.
2: Along the Tracks-This marked my first ever collaboration with film photographer Levi Eugeniu of Me in Film Life. The whole process, from shooting to developing took all of 3 weeks but the wait was well worth it as the image has garnered over 500 likes on my instagram account.
1: Nastygals Do It Better! An Obsession-Dun, Dun, Dun! The best of the best, topping my year of style is the post that made it happen for me. This chic LBD look was recognized on Nasty Gal’s blog, which was huge as it garnered exposure for my blog and one of the images for this look made it onto instagram’s popular page. Not bad for my first feature, huh?
