Witches, Bitches, Badasses and Joan Fucking Jett – this month on STACKEDD we’ll be saluting all kinds of “Bad” girls. This pictorial by Allyce Andrew showcases some true ‘Witches.’ Though the term can be used to address women who celebrate nature, it was one of the first (and in certain eras most deadly) slags women became tagged with; mostly likely because women who take their power – in whatever form – for some, are really, really scary.
Everyone has an opinion on the word Bitch. Depending on your culture, upbringing and gender- identity it can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. It’s the go-to word for any woman who disagrees with, well, anything. “Badass-ary” is becoming a more and more celebrated term for women, but one person’s badass can easily be another person’s bitch.
Joan Jett is a goddamn ICON to witches, bitches and badasses everywhere. She’s someone whose career has been about breaking rules. Her impact in music, queer and pop culture will finally be given its due when Joan accepts her place in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame next month.
So witches, bitches, badasses and devotees of Ms. Jett unite! Because much like our busty, bad and bitchy lady-fellow Jessica Rabbit once said – most of us aren’t really bad, we’re just often drawn that way. MDL
