Most musicians have to take a job to support the job of playing music – some take several. With the recent opening of White Center boutique Star Palace, musician and medical marijuana professional Prisilla Ray can add “Retail Guru” to her long list of career accomplishments. She took a few precious minutes out of her beyond busy schedule to chat with us about her latest gig.
How many “jobs” do you have right now?
At the current moment I have four jobs and all of them are enjoyable. I am the sales manager at Herban Legends (MMJ) in White Center. I get to throw events, connect with and really help sick patients, test various products, and work with one of the coolest crews of musicians and artists around. I also just opened a local art and music boutique next door to Herban called Star Palace. I sell everything from clocks, lampshades, leather harnesses, jewelry, purses, and local clothing lines to local band merch and records. We have an amazing event space in the back so I throw events there and rent it out hourly. The other two jobs are bands. I sing and play keyboards/keytar in Trick Candles and am Apollonia/Sheila E in a band called Purple Mane. We pay tribute to an artist by the name of please don’t sue us.
When I was 21 I got asked to audition for The Cute Lepers. I was working at Rudy’s Barbershop, and at the time they were an amazing company to work for if you were a musician. After four solid years of touring around the States and Europe, I knew that I would never work a job again that I couldn’t also be a musician. The MMJ industry can be a flexible one if you play your cards right, so I decided to start my own all girl trim crew to give me the time and money I needed to take music more seriously.
Trimming cannabis as a job is funny because sometimes you go to a space and they have food for you and all the amenities, and other times you go and there’s no heat, you’re standing around a table with no chairs for up to 15 hours and you have to pee outside. Sometimes I’m surprised I ever got other girls to do it with me. When my wrists started to hurt from all of the tedious movements I decided to become garden manager of my friends large MMJ warehouse. Dealing with plants can be very relaxing but it does get a bit boring because they don’t talk back. I met some of the owners at Herban Legends and was really digging their enthusiasm. They had ideas of blending music and art in with the new cannabis industry we were all a part of, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.
How did you come up with the idea for Star Palace?
We already had the space next door but didn’t have anything in the front room. I started Star Palace out of sheer frustration that we were not making money in the space. I thought to myself, I have so many talented friends that have nowhere to display their art besides Etsy, which is great but can be very time consuming for a seller. I put the word out and was shocked by the amount of artists that wrote me and were referred by other friends. The store has become so much more than I ever imagined it would be. As soon as you walk through the door you get a clear view of how much talent we have in this city, in fact, I’ve been slammed with messages from so many artists that I am currently looking for investors to move it down the street into a bigger space.
White Center is a truly amazing place and is the most culturally diverse area of King County. It has a bad rep but I get harassed more in the UD, Capitol Hill, and Belltown then I ever do here. Star Palace fits in perfectly because White Center is already so eclectic and artistic.
As far as favorites go, the Salvadorian bakery around the corner is amazing and mostly gluten free (not sweets), we have one of the best Taco trucks in town, La Fondita, and a Full Tilt 3 doors down. I am obsessed with the menu at The Company across the street. Their steak salad is amazing! The Southgate Roller Rink throws metal shows and we have a sign that says, “White Center – Not so white, not so center” on it. It really is lined up to be the next Georgetown. Can I also say rentals down here are CHEAP!!!
