With its Capitol Hill debut last week, BC’s legendary Meat & Bread proves that simplicity is key. Airy with tastefully minimal decor and upscale cafeteria style service, they recognize that both they, and you, are there for the “Meat & Bread,” just like their name implies. Not that that’s all they offer – daily soups, salads and desserts populate the menu – but make no mistake, it’s the simply sublime sandwiches that are the stars of this show.
At the opening night party fans lined up for samples of their meatballs and grilled cheese, and full servings of lamb sandwiches and their signature Porchetta ($10). Before you flinch at the price, this is a ten dollar sandwich worth every penny. The bread itself is magically both dense and chewy. The pork is perfectly cooked, then chopped with bits of the crispy skin and drizzled with a nut-less pesto. You will relish each bite of this baby and contemplate picking up another to take home mid-chew.
Meat & Bread also offer up their own take-home sauces and rubs displayed like art in the center of the shop, should you want to spice up your own meat routine. Sriracha devotees will dig the Sambal sauce and its mix of chiles and peppers. Their Mustard is yellow gold if you are a fan of simple sauces, the pork approved rub is a mere $7 -all three come in a set for $18 – and exactly what your Dad wants for Father’s Day.
