Katie Blackstock is a wonderful human being. She’s Wonder Woman, like, for real…and also in our photo spread Wonder Woman’s Day Off. Plus, she’s also got the voice of an angel, most recently singing in the band Inly with another friend of STACKEDD, Mindie Lind.
Katie’s got a new project, collaborating with Joseph Braley and David T. Rapaport to form MASZER. Katie’s rad self is even making some super cool t-shirts for their upcoming gigs.
She’s so cool you almost wanna hate her, but you can’t because she’s also hilarious, sweet, and goddamn adorable. This is why I call her the “Channing Tatum of Ballard”. She met me for cocktails and we mostly talked about boys, but we talked about some other stuff, too.
So, how did you get involved in music? Is it always something you’ve been into?
I grew up singing in church! I don’t remember a time where music wasn’t in my life. It has always been one of my greatest loves and greatest fears… I guess because, with anything you love so much, it has the power to destroy you in the end.
What’s up with your musical projects?
The last few years I’ve just been trying to say “YES” to anything that has come my way. There are so many beautiful & talented artists in my community. Which can either be intimidating or inspiring. I’ve been trying to choose the latter. Most recently, I was in the band INLY, and I still sing with Mindie Lind whenever she’ll have me.
With MASZER I wasn’t looking to join another band… but when these dudes called me up a few months ago to ask if I wanted to make some music with them, “NO” was not in my vocabulary. I have been a big fan of Stitch & Jo as humans & as musicians for years. In 2012, I put together a benefit for my father who was in need of a liver transplant, their band The Mother’s Anger agreed to play and they barely even knew me at the time. I remember watching them play & thinking “Dang! I wanna make music with those dudes!”. Now, I watch them in rehearsals and think “Dang! How’d I end up making music with those dudes?!” It’s super dreamy!
Collectively, we fart around and call ourselves MASZER. It sounds like, Joseph Braley (AKA JOJO SUNGLASSES), David T. Rapaport (AKA STITCX), and myself (AKA ME) serving up some psychedelic hot sludge sundaes at a kosher pizza party in the desert. Is that a genre?
What kind of musical collaborations do you gravitate towards?
I’m still finding my way when it comes to writing my own songs… so I really dig sharing my instrument and absorbing inspiration from other people’s songs. My affinity for different genre’s has always been pretty deep & wide, I think the things I have been involved in personally reflect that. Generally people who aren’t jerks, and I feel challenged by!
What would be your dream collaboration?
ZZ TOP. Or Jem & The Holograms. Or both. Now THAT would be truly outrageous.
How do you want to grow as a musical artist? Do you feel like what you’re doing right now is helping you come closer to that?
I want to keep moving and keep putting things into the world that haven’t been there before! My MASZER brothers are definitely helping stretch me and giving me a safe place to explore and challenge my comfort zones.
You were our Wonder Woman for our “Wonder Woman’s Day Off” photo spread. How fuckin fun was that?
SUPER fuckin’. I mean, if you’re into hanging out with brilliant babes like Rachel White & Michael Stephens, and smoking cigarettes and drinking wine in superhero underwear. Which, I am.
What about other modeling gigs?
Besides being a model American? *puts hand in armpit, makes fart noise*
How many questions did you want to answer with an armpit fart noise?
ALL OF THEM.
