Ahhhh, Simplicity. When poorly executed it is at best it’s “basic”. But when done properly, as is the case with Renee Erickson’s General Porpoise Coffee and Doughnuts, it’s perfection. Everything about General Porpoise including the small, bright, and airy shop itself is there to showcase the product- a $3.50 filled doughnut, available in a handful of daily varieties.
There is, of course, excellent coffee – delivered via a hot pink Espresso machine – and a selection of sparkling beverages -adult and otherwise- but the doughnuts are so spectacular, if it were a walk-up window that served nothing else, this place would still rate 5 stars.
The doughnut pastry is light and seems unsweetened save for a dusting of granulated sugar. The fillings which consist of custards, jams and lemon jelly are sweet without being cloying and their petite size urges you to indulge in more than one variety. The only downside, if any, is that the price point is high. Erickson’s automatic surcharge (instead of tipping) will see you spending $15 for two doughnuts and a coffee. Occasionally high prices and quality do go hand and hand, and this is such a case. You may feel a bit classist laying down a fiver for a doughnut, but don’t worry, that feeling will disappear as soon as you are tongue deep in custard and plotting your to-go purchase.
